Weight Watchers Family Power:
5 Simple Rules for a Healthy-Weight Home

Weight Watchers has been with us for a long time now and is a hugely successful commercial diet program that centers on a balance of low fat nutrition, exercise and counseling.

A wide range of different foods are given a points value and Weight Watchers members then use a points calculator and simple to follow recipes provided by the program.

Participants also attend local counseling sessions for both ideas and advice and to help with the lifestyle changes that accompany not just this but any dieting program. Members can also get online support as well as online menus and points calculators.

To further help participants, Weight Watchers have their own range of meals that you can get at a number of the larger grocery chains.

A points value is given to various foods according to the portion size, the calories that portion contains, the quantity of fiber and the quantity of fat contained in each serving. As a general rule, high fat foods will have a high points value and high fiber foods will have a low points value. A dieter's daily allowance then depends upon things like body weight and target weight.

The formula for calculating a points value is as follows:

weight watchers formula

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Note: when considering the term (min{r, 4}) no more than 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. So, if the actual dietary figure is under 4 then this figure is used, but, if the figure is over 4 then 4 is used.

Below are just a few examples of the points values assigned to particular foods:
