Weight Watchers has been around for a long time now and is a fabulously successful commercial diet program that concentrates on balancing low fat nutrition, exercise and counseling.

A wide range of different foods are given a points value and Weight Watchers members use a points calculator and simple to follow recipes which are provided by the program.

Participants are also encouraged to attend local counseling sessions to get ideas and advice and to help with the lifestyle changes that accompany not just this but any dieting plan. Members can also get online support as well as online points calculators and menus.

To further help participants, Weight Watchers have their own line of meals which you can get through a number of the larger grocery chains.

A points value is given to foods according to the portion size, the calories that portion contains, the amount of fiber and the quantity of fat in every serving. As a general rule, high fat foods have a high points value and foods which are high in fiber have a low points value. A dieter's daily allowance then depends on things like his or her body weight and the desired weight loss.

The points formula is:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Please note: when considering the term (min{r, 4}) a maximum of 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. Accordingly, if the actual dietary figure is less than 4 then this figure is used, however, if the figure is over 4 then 4 is used.
