International Weight Watchers has been with us for a long time now and is a hugely successful commercial diet program that revolves around balancing exercise, low fat nutrition and guidance.

Items of food are given a points value and Weight Watchers members then make use of a points calculator and recipes that are provided by the program.

Members are also encouraged to attend local counseling sessions for both ideas and advice and to help with the changes in lifestyle that go along with not just this but any dieting program. Members can also get online support and online menus and points calculators.

As well, Weight Watchers have their own range of meals that can be purchased through many of the larger grocery chains.

A points value is assigned to foods according to the portion size, the calories that portion contains, the amount of fiber and the amount of fat in every serving. In general, high fat foods have a high points value and high fiber foods have a low points value. A dieter's daily allowance is then dependent on such things as his or her body weight and the desired weight loss.

The formula used to calculate a points score is as follows:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Note: in the term (min{r, 4}) no more than 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. So, if the actual figure is lower than 4 then this figure is used, but, where the figure is over 4 then 4 is used.
