International Weight Watchers has been around for many years now and is an incredibly successful diet program that revolves around a balance of exercise, low fat nutrition and guidance.

Items of food are allotted a points value and Weight Watchers members use a points calculator and a wide range of recipes provided by the program.

Participants are also encouraged to attend local counseling sessions for both ideas and advice and to assist with the changes in lifestyle that go along with any dieting program. There is also online support and online menus and calculators.

To further assist members, Weight Watchers produce their own line of meals that can be bought at a lot of the larger grocery chains.

A points value is allocated to various foods according to the portion size, the calories that portion contains, the amount of fiber and the quantity of fat in every serving. Generally, foods which are high in fat will have a high points value and high fiber foods will have a low points value. The daily allowance for dieters is then dependent upon things like body weight and how much weight he or she wants to lose.

The formula for calculating a points value is:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Note: in the term (min{r, 4}) a maximum of 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. For instance, if the actual dietary figure is lower than 4 this figure is used, however, where the figure is over 4 then 4 is used.
