Weight Watchers has been around for many years now and is a fabulously successful commercial diet program which centers on balancing exercise, low fat nutrition and guidance.

Different foods are given a points value and members use a points calculator and simple to follow recipes that are provided by the program.

Members also attend local counseling sessions to get both ideas and advice and to help with the lifestyle changes which go along with not just this but any dieting program. Members can also get online support as well as online menus and calculators.

In addition, Weight Watchers produce their own line of meals that can be purchased at a lot of the bigger grocery chains.

A points value is allotted to foods according to the portion size, the calories that portion contains, the amount of fiber and the amount of fat in each serving. As a rule, foods which are high in fat have a high points value and foods which are high in fiber have a low points value. The daily allowance for dieters then depends on such things as his or her body weight and the desired weight loss.

The points formula is:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Please note: when considering the term (min{r, 4}) a maximum of 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. In other words, if the actual dietary figure is under 4 then this figure is used, however, if the figure is more than 4 then 4 is used.
