Items of food are allotted a points value and Weight Watchers members then use a points calculator and hundreds of easy to follow recipes provided by the program. Members also attend counseling session in their local area to get ideas and advice and to assist with the lifestyle changes which accompany any dieting program. Members are also provided with online support as well as online calculators and menus. As if this were not enough, Weight Watchers have their own range of meals that may be purchased at a number of the larger grocery chains. A points value is allotted to various foods based upon the size of the portion, the number of calories, the amount of fiber and the amount of fat in every serving. Generally, high fat foods have a high points value and foods which are high in fiber have a low points value. A dieter's daily allowance is then dependent upon things like body weight and amount of weight loss he or she wishes to achieve. The formula used to calculate a points score is:
Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams (Please note: in the term (min{r, 4}) no more than 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. So, if the actual dietary figure is under 4 this figure is used, however, where the figure is greater than 4 then 4 is used. Here are a few examples of the points given to particular foods:
