Weight Watchers has been with us for many years now and has proved itself to be a hugely successful diet program that centers on a balance of exercise, low fat nutrition and counseling.

Food is given a points score and Weight Watchers members use a points calculator and hundreds of easy to follow recipes provided by the program.

Participants also attend counseling session in their home area for both advice and ideas and to assist with the lifestyle changes that accompany any dieting program. Members are also provided with online support together with online points calculators and menus.

As if this were not enough, Weight Watchers produce their own line of meals which can be purchased at many of the larger grocery chains.

A points score is given to various foods according to the portion size, the calories that portion contains, the quantity of fiber and the quantity of fat in each serving. Usually, high fat foods have a high points score and foods which are high in fiber have a low points score. The daily allowance for dieters is then dependent on such things as body weight and the desired weight loss.

The formula used to calculate a points score is as follows:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Note: when considering the term (min{r, 4}) no more than 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. So, if the actual figure is lower than 4 then this figure is used, but, if the figure is greater than 4 then 4 is used.
