International Weight Watchers has been around for a long time and is a fabulously successful commercial diet program which concentrates on balancing low fat nutrition, exercise and counseling.

Food is allotted a points value and members make use of a points calculator and recipes which are provided by the program.

Members are also encouraged to attend counseling session in their home area to get advice and ideas and to assist with the lifestyle changes which go along with any dieting program. Members can also get online support as well as online calculators and menus.

To further assist members, Weight Watchers make their own line of meals which you can get through many of the larger grocery chains.

A points value is given to foods according to the size of the portion, the number of calories, the quantity of fiber and the amount of fat contained in each serving. Generally speaking, foods which are high in fat have a high points value and high fiber foods have a low points value. The daily allowance for dieters then depends on such things as his or her body weight and how much weight he or she wants to lose.

The formula for calculating a points value is:

weight watchers formula

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Note: in the term (min{r, 4}) a maximum of 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. For instance, if the actual dietary figure is less than 4 this figure is used, however, where the figure is greater than 4 then 4 is used.

Here you can see a few examples of the points scores assigned to certain foods:
