Weight Watchers has been about for a long time now and is a hugely successful commercial diet program that revolves around a balance of exercise, low fat nutrition and counseling.

Food is given a points score and Weight Watchers members use a points calculator and a wide range of recipes which are provided by the program.

Participants are also encouraged to attend counseling sessions locally for both advice and ideas and to assist with the lifestyle changes that go along with not just this but any diet program. Members can also get online support together with online points calculators and menus.

As if this were not enough, Weight Watchers have their own range of meals which can be bought at a lot of the bigger grocery chains.

A points score is assigned to a variety of foods based upon the portion size, the number of calories, the amount of fiber and the amount of fat contained in each serving. In general, foods which are high in fat will have a high points score and foods which are high in fiber will have a low points score. A dieter's daily allowance is then dependent upon such things as his or her body weight and amount of weight loss he or she wishes to achieve.

The formula used to calculate a points score is as follows:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Please note: in the term (min{r, 4}) a maximum of 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. For instance, if the actual figure is under 4 this figure is used, however, where the figure is over 4 then 4 is used.
