Weight Watchers has been around for a long time now and is a hugely successful commercial diet program which concentrates on a balance of exercise, low fat nutrition and guidance.

Items of food are given a points score and Weight Watchers members then make use of a points calculator and recipes provided by the program.

Participants also attend counseling session in their home area to get both ideas and advice and to help with the lifestyle changes which go along with not just this but any dieting program. There is also online support as well as online menus and points calculators.

To further assist members, Weight Watchers have their own range of meals which can be bought through many of the larger grocery chains.

A points score is assigned to a variety of foods according to the size of the portion, the calories that portion contains, the quantity of fiber and the quantity of fat in every serving. Normally, high fat foods will have a high points score and high fiber foods will have a low points score. A dieter's daily allowance is then dependent on things like his or her body weight and target weight.

The formula for calculating a points value is:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Please note: in the term (min{r, 4}) no more than 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. So, if the actual figure is less than 4 this figure is used, however, if the figure is more than 4 then 4 is used.
