Weight Watchers has been with us for many years and has proved to be a very successful diet program that concentrates on a balance of exercise, low fat nutrition and counseling.

Different foods are assigned a points score and members use a points calculator and a wide range of recipes which are provided by the program.

Participants are also encouraged to attend counseling sessions locally for both ideas and advice and to help with the lifestyle changes that go along with any dieting program. Members are also provided with online support and online menus and points calculators.

To further help participants, Weight Watchers have their own range of meals that can be bought at many of the larger grocery chains.

A points score is assigned to a variety of foods according to the portion size, the number of calories, the quantity of fiber and the amount of fat in each serving. Generally, high fat foods will have a high points score and high fiber foods will have a low points score. A dieter's daily allowance then depends upon things like his or her body weight and target weight.

The points formula is as follows:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Note: in the term (min{r, 4}) no more than 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. For instance, if the actual figure is under 4 this figure is used, however, if the figure is greater than 4 then 4 is used.
