Weight Watchers has been about for many years now and has proved itself to be a hugely successful commercial diet program which revolves around balancing low fat nutrition, exercise and guidance.

Food is given a points score and members use a points calculator and hundreds of easy to follow recipes provided by the program.

Participants also attend counseling session in their local area to get advice and ideas and to help with the lifestyle changes which accompany any diet plan. There is also online support as well as online points calculators and menus.

To further help participants, Weight Watchers produce their own range of meals that can be bought through many of the bigger grocery chains.

A points score is given to various foods based upon the size of the portion, the number of calories, the amount of fiber and the quantity of fat in each serving. Normally, foods which are high in fat will have a high points score and high fiber foods will have a low points score. A dieter's daily allowance then depends on things like body weight and amount of weight loss he or she wishes to achieve.

The formula for calculating a points value is:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Please note: in the term (min{r, 4}) a maximum of 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. That means that, if the actual figure is less than 4 then this figure is used, however, if the figure is greater than 4 then 4 is used.
