Weight Watchers has been around for many years now and has proved to be a very successful commercial diet program which revolves around a balance of low fat nutrition, exercise and counseling.

Food is assigned a points value and Weight Watchers members make use of a points calculator and recipes provided by the program.

Members also attend local counseling sessions for advice and ideas and to assist with the lifestyle changes which accompany not just this but any diet plan. There is also online support together with online calculators and menus.

Additionally, Weight Watchers produce their own line of meals which may be purchased at many of the bigger grocery chains.

A points value is allocated to foods based upon the size of the portion, the number of calories, the amount of fiber and the amount of fat in every serving. As a general rule, high fat foods will have a high points value and high fiber foods will have a low points value. A dieter's daily allowance then depends on such things as his or her body weight and the desired weight loss.

The formula for calculating a points value is as follows:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Please note: when considering the term (min{r, 4}) a maximum of 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. For example, if the actual dietary figure is under 4 this figure is used, however, where the figure is greater than 4 then 4 is used.
