Weight Watchers has been with us for a long time and is a tremendously successful diet program that centers on a balance of exercise, low fat nutrition and counseling.

Food is assigned a points value and members use a points calculator and hundreds of great recipes which are provided by the program.

Participants are also encouraged to attend counseling session in their home area to get both ideas and advice and to assist with the lifestyle changes that go along with any diet program. Members can also get online support together with online menus and calculators.

Additionally, Weight Watchers make their own range of meals which you can purchase at many of the larger grocery chains.

A points value is allotted to foods according to the portion size, the number of calories, the amount of fiber and the quantity of fat contained in each serving. As a rule, high fat foods will have a high points value and foods which are high in fiber will have a low points value. The daily allowance for dieters is then dependent on such things as body weight and target weight.

The formula used to calculate a points score is:

Where: p = Points | c = Calories | f = Fat Grams | r = Dietary fiber Grams

(Please note: when considering the term (min{r, 4}) no more than 4 grams of fiber are used in the calculation. That means that, if the actual dietary figure is less than 4 then this figure is used, but, where the figure is more than 4 then 4 is used.
